From August 2022 until mid-April 2023, I lived and worked in Egypt. During the first four months, I was a student at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo, where I learned the Egyptian dialect and became more familiar with Egyptian history, culture, and politics. In addition, I took various courses, such as the principles of Naskh calligraphy and the glazing of tiles. Subsequently, I was an artist-in-residence at the Fayoum Art Center in Tunis and had a longer working period at ARDforART in Cairo. The highlight of my stay was to learn khayamiya in the Street of the Tentmakers in Cairo, a textile technique that has much in common with my art practice and academic research.
From 8 to 11 June 2023, I exhibited work that I made in Egypt during Springboard Art Fair in the Werkspoorkathedraal in Utrecht. Together with Noah Arends, Daisy Madden-Wells, Jhonie van Boeijenen, and Kee van der Meer, I got coached by Galerie Fleur & Wouter in preparation for Springboard Art Fair.
